CBC Radio

by Dave

cbc_radio_oneUp until last weekend, the radio was my enemy. First, the repeat music, I’m as Canadian as the next guy, but I can only hear Gordon Downie tell me that love is a curse so many times before I start to hate the great white north. Second, the repeat ads, these are more annoying than the music; not only are they played even more often, they (mostly) are horribly written and made with terrible voice actors (watermelon viagra, anyone?) Finally, the hosts, lets not forget about radio personalities, radio stations somehow manage to corral the most uninteresting group of people to do their shows. This morning I heard these guys arguing about whether it was more appropriate for a man to cry during a movie or when a sports hero is added to a hall of fame, serious. (The argument is moot point, of course, because REAL men only cry when their favorite MMA fighter loses) Outside of Alan Cross (whom, really does, save commercial radio) I don’t think I’ve really ever found an interesting radio personality.

A reprise. I’ve found CBC Radio. Maybe this is all old to everyone, but I’ve just started listening and haven’t been happier with our country. CBC Radio has both interesting commentary and good music, and even better: no ads! (Ok, so they get a little bit of an advantage as they don’t need to play ads as they’re funded by the government) I’ve found myself actually learning about music, culture and the spliced in news keeps me informed. While not all content is for everyone (they play ALL types of music, and even have radio drama) it’s sure to keep you interested for hours. I find myself listening to music I would never considered, and finding new music to enjoy.

I fully recommend heading over here, to find your local frequency and tune in, or here to stream it online. You can even pitch your own show, if that’s your thing.

Grow Bike

grow-bike

This is brilliant. It can apparently change into four different bikes, but I am unaware how the bigger bikes get their propulsion (the smallest is just a push bike). Any ideas?
